We are already one month into the new year (can you believe it?) which means your outdated, cluttered kitchen is well overdue for a revamp. There is only one problem - a serious lack of funds. Don't worry, there are a few simple ways for you to update your kitchen without breaking the bank. Take a look below for our suggestions on some quick and easy ways to give your kitchen a much-needed face lift.
Add a new gadget
If your bank balance won't quite stretch far enough for a new fridge or oven, then consider a smaller appliance or gadget. It is amazing the effect a new coffee machine, mixer, or juicer can have in instantly updating your kitchen. For a fun and functional touch, look out for retro-style small appliances such as a KitchenAid Mixer or bright kettle from Morphy Richards.
Paint cabinets
It may sound silly at first, but an easy solution to a tired old kitchen is to give cabinets a fresh coat of paint. You can choose to paint the outside, or another interesting idea is to paint only the inside of your cabinets in a different shade.
Choose a contrasting colour to give your kitchen some depth. Alternatively you may like to remove doors to create open shelves, or insert glass into doors so the colour can be seen through the cabinets.
Use large baskets for storage
A great way to maximise storage, besides our other ideas, is to add some large baskets to your extra kitchen space. They are a great way to store fruit and vegetables, tea towels, kitchen utensils and other miscellaneous household items.
Here are some more fantastic ideas to increase storage in your kitchen.
Display fresh flowers, fruit and herbs
Nothing brightens up a kitchen more than by displaying something fresh. Scour op shops or eBay for unusual-looking or vintage vases and fill them with fresh flowers. Stack brightly coloured fruit in wire baskets or inside glass bowls.
Another great touch is to plant potted herbs and place them on your kitchen window sill. This is a great alternative to buying herbs at your local supermarket or store. Not only do they lift the look of your kitchen, they're also add colour and flavour to your cooking.
Update your old appliances
If you can afford it, replace an old appliance such as a dishwasher, oven or fridge with a new one, which can work wonders for your kitchen. New styles including integrated or 'hidden' appliances can offer a more clean and streamlined look. Likewise, you may like to throw out your old gas cooktop and replace it with an induction cooktop.
